50 Shades of Green: Global landmarks to light up for St. Patrick’s Day

Tourism Ireland has announced its Global Greening line-up for St. Patrick’s Day, and the emerald energy is spreading.
Rome’s Colosseum, Rio’s Christ the Redeemer and Las Vegas’s Welcome Sign are among dozens of global landmarks set to go green this March 17.
New participants this year are 7 World Trade Center in New York, the Big Wheel in Paris, the light rail system in Addis Ababa and City Hall in Tel Aviv.
The Boston Red Sox baseball team will also wear green on St Patrick’s Day.
The Global Greening campaign is part of Tourism Ireland’s €21.5 million first-half promotional drive to grow overseas tourism in 2016.
Ireland saw a record 8.6 million visitors last year, with the government aiming to grow that figure to 10 million annual visitors by 2025.
“St Patrick’s Day presents a unique and wonderful opportunity to promote Ireland worldwide,” said Minister for Tourism Paschal Donohoe.
Tourism Ireland estimates its St Patrick’s Day promotional programmes generate positive publicity worth over €10 million each March.
“The eagerness of cities and countries to take part underlines the strength of the deep connection that people all over the world feel to Ireland,” added Niall Gibbons, CEO of the all-island marketing organisation.
“There will be saturation coverage of the island across the airwaves, in newspapers and digital media – and that’s an invaluable boost.”
Other new sites set to go green in 2016 include Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Mount Ulriken TV mast in Bergen and the Hofbräuhaus in Munich.
The new sites will join ‘old favourites’ including the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Empire State Building in New York.
